Provide financial relief for the fight against breast cancer.

What We Do

Provide financial relief for the fight against breast cancer.

Financial support

When they were just 15 years old, cousins Erika Rech and Mike Ruane found out that one of their family members was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Six months later, a second family member was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Throughout diagnosis and treatment, Erika and Mike witnessed firsthand the devastating effect that cancer can have on a family. “The more we learned about breast cancer, and the treatment, costs and pain it causes, the more compelled we felt to help out families struggling with this disease.” They vowed to form an organization to help families navigate through a cancer diagnosis by providing resources and emotional and financial support.

Through their determination, Breast Intentions was created. Mike and Erika rely solely on donations to fund their cause. These two high school students began researching non-profits and raising money for families during their freshman year. They made their first donation in August of 2007. Erika and Mike enlisted the help of family and friends and continue to make a difference today. Today, Breast Intentions is run entirely by volunteers and all donations go to women in need.  Breast Intentions is operating chapters in New York, Illinois and Massachusetts.

“Erika and Michael are truly an inspiration,” says Dominick Antonino. “There is a lot to be said about two teenagers who can begin such an amazing project.”

Our goal is to encourage young women to take an active stance on their health, learn about their risks for breast cancer and perform a self breast exam each month. In association with Breast Intentions®, we strive to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention techniques in order to empower, educate, strengthen, and inspire women.

It’s estimated that approximately 211,240 women will be diagnosed with a new invasive case of breast cancer. Tragically, breast cancer will claim the lives of 40,000 women, leaving behind grieving families and young children. While millions of dollars are raised each year to fund the research effort for finding a cure, awareness and early detection are our best defense against breast cancer.

The Pink Pact Educational Program was created by Erika Rech and Mike Ruane to teach young women about breast health and the need for self examinations. Erika and Mike have brought their program to high schools around New Jersey. The program is presented as an assembly, with poster contests, prizes, free giveaways, and features speakers familiar with the breast cancer journey.

As NJ Heroes, Mike and Erika’s program is funded in part by First Lady Mary Pat Christie and the NJ Heroes Grant Program. Bring the program to your school and earn volunteer hours!
